1 killed, 1 critically injured in overnight crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A driver was critically injured and his passenger killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Philips Highway and Butler Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a Nissan Maxima driven by Anthony Jones was headed north just after 2 a.m. when it left the road and collided with a road sign pole and utility pole. His 30-year-old passenger, James Jackson, 31, was thrown from the car and died at the scene.

Jones, 39, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition.

One lane of northbound traffic on Philips Highway was blocked overnight as troopers investigated and cleared the scene.
