The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says 68-year-old Nancy Wingard stepped onto University near Barnes Road about 6:30 a.m. when she was hit.

Wingard was not at a crosswalk or intersection, police said, and a car traveling west in the right lane of University struck her after she crossed the eastbound lanes and turn lane.

Wingard was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Police say Wingard was at fault and the driver will not be charged. They said there were no early indications of impairment or speed on the part of the driver.

All westbound lanes of University were closed while the accident was investigated and cleared.
