JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As crews work to install red light cameras at intersections across the city, drivers are wondering when they'll officially be turned on.
Earlier this month, the sheriff announced cameras would be put up at 25 intersections throughout Jacksonville.
Construction is slow-going at the corner of Southside Boulevard and Baymeadows Road, where crews are installing the first of the cameras.
"There's always construction everywhere, honestly, but I guess it takes as long as it takes," driver Shreya Desay said.
Nearly a week after work the started, there are no cameras ready to roll. When they do start snapping pictures, for the first 30 days, drivers will receive a warning instead of a fine.
After that grace period is over, a citation will cost $158.
"Me, personally, I run a lot of yellow lights, so I hope they don't get me," driver Patrick Dupre said.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, three cameras are listed as "under construction," while 22 more intersections wait for work to begin. The goal is to install cameras at many of Jacksonville's busiest intersections.
"Intersections can be very dangerous, particularly to motorists that are not paying attention," Channel 4 safety expert Ken Jefferson said.
He said people always need to be aware. And some drivers say even if they get caught, the cameras could be helpful.
"I hate the idea of it, but I think it's precautionary, so it' s a good thing to have it at least," Desay said.
Within a few weeks, cameras are scheduled to be active at at least five intersections.
