The crash happened just before 4 p.m. when a car left New Berlin Road on a curve between Cedar Point Road and Port Jacksonville Parkway and struck a pole.

Police said Hedrick was wearing a seat belt.  Traffic homicide detectives were investigating speed and any medical conditions as possible factors in the crash.

All three roads were closed for a couple hours due to the crash, and there were some power outages in the area as a result of the vehicle hitting the power pole.

Hedrick was a retired Jacksonville firefighter who had been with the department more than 30 years. He was Fireman of the Year in 1998.
