Report: Vermont On Endangered List Because Of Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart Blamed For Destroying State's Natural Beauty
The National Trust for Historic Preservation said Vermont is at
risk of losing its natural beauty because of Wal-Mart mega-stores.
The non-profit said Wal-Mart is planning to open seven of them --
and that it's likely to attract other big retailers.
National Trust president Richard Moe said that "will change the
character" of the state.
Vermont officials said the National Trust report seemed alarmist and gave the impression the state was about to be overrun by Wal-Mart.
"Vermont has a good
record in historic preservation and I hope that the report will encourage people to come see why Vermont is such a special place," said Vermont Tourism and Marketing Commissioner Bruce Hyde.
Gas and oil exploration landed Nine Mile Canyon in Utah on
the list.
The home of horse-racing legend Seabiscuit in California was also
named.
National Trust said the church association that owns
Ridgewood Ranch doesn't have the money to maintain the buildings
that still stand.
