Hotel Safety Dos And Don'ts

When Checking In

hotel room

  • Ask for two key cards (even if you’re traveling alone), just in case you lose one.
  • Pick up a map (if you haven’t already done this at the car rental place). Ask the desk clerk where the nearest drugstore or grocery store is so you can find both easily should you need them.
  • Ask for a hotel business card or match book to stick in your pocket. If you are ever lost or need to give a cab driver the right address, you’re all set.

During Your Stay
  • Stay on floors 2-6. Fire ladders don’t reach much higher than six floors. Avoid the first floor because windows allow for easy entry.
  • Leave your key next to your bed in case you need to leave your room during the night (if there’s an alarm of some kind).
  • Electronic keys are the most secure. The codes are changed after each traveler.
  • Use the peephole to identify anyone who comes to your door. Do not open the door if you’re not expecting anyone or if you don’t recognize the person. Call the front desk immediately.
  • When riding the elevator alone, stand next to the floor button panel. If you sense any problem, press the buttons for the next two or three floors and get off as soon as possible.
  • Be careful about putting out the service tag for breakfast room service. This allows other people to see if you are alone, and when you will open the door.
  • Call the front desk immediately if the hotel room door appears ajar or unlocked.
  • Try to always use the main entrance of the hotel, especially at night.
