Combining Wedding, Honeymoon Costs Less

POSTED: Friday, July 30, 2004

Great Ways To Save

  • Invited guests get a vacation out of your wedding.
  • Make your wedding as individual as you are; resorts offer many options and additions.
  • Events at an all-inclusive resort decrease stress -- you never need cash and the experts at the resort plan everything for you! Some resorts even include the wedding for free.

Planning:

  • Plan it together. If something goes wrong, the planner will feel guilty and the nonplanner might feel left out.
  • Be sure to ask about specials -- many of them are never advertised.
  • Be very specific in asking for what you want, from flowers to room view.
  • Register for your honeymoon with a travel agent. The average couple who uses a registry gets $500 to $1,000, which can really make a difference.
  • Plan to have guests come before the wedding and leave immediately after. If they stay too long, you won’t have much of a honeymoon.

Legal Stuff:
  • Check out the regulations in the country you’re visiting for any pertinent marriage requirements such as length of stay, blood test, witnesses, etc. Your travel agent should be able to help you with this.
  • Even though you might be anxious to get your name changed, bring all documentation in the original name and have plane tickets in the original name. You can go through the name change routine once you’ve returned to the United States.

On Your Way/While You’re There:
  • Blab a little. Tell people you are on your honeymoon. It’s a shameless way to get extras like a free bottle of champagne or a free room upgrade.
  • Call ahead to the airline and let them know you’re bringing your wedding dress on the airplane with you. Ask if there are specific recommendations, such as having the dress boxed or hung in a plastic garment bag. (Don’t check it!)

Some Great Places To Consider:

  • Sandals -- in the Caribbean: The wedding/honeymoon package requires only a five-night stay and the wedding ceremony is included in the price of the honeymoon.
  • Palace Resorts -- in Cancun and the Riviera Maya
  • SuperClubs -- also in the Caribbean
