Two Die After Tornado Rips Through Lake City

Severe Storms, Tornadoes Cause Damage In North Florida

POSTED: Friday, March 7, 2008
UPDATED: 8:37 pm EST March 7, 2008

Two people died Friday morning after a tornado ripped through Lake City in northern Florida, officials said.

Columbia County Emergency Management spokesman Harvey Campbell said Mae Lois McCray was killed Friday when a tree fell on her mobile home, and a man, who was not immediately identified, was electrocuted when he was attempting to connect a generator.

McCray was the pastor of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church, which she built next to her home.

The severe thunderstorms and at least two tornadoes that hit northern Florida also caused minor injuries, destroyed several homes and knocked down power lines.

At 5 p.m., at least 4,500 Columbia County residents were without power.

One home in the Lake City area was left undamaged except that it knocked on its side by the strong winds. The owners said they were inside of the mobile home with their parents when the house toppled over.

"The winds started really picking up. Then, I saw the tree by the house behind us fall. There was my dad, me, my mom and my wife all in the kitchen. We turned to go out into the living room and that's when all the doors blew open … and the whole house just flipped over," said Dan Helton.

"It was a scary experience. I never want to experience it again," said Lisa Helton.

The Heltons said they were thankful and amazed they all made it out of the flipped home unharmed.

Couple Escapes Tornado Torn Home

In Baker County, most people had problems with localized flooding but one couple told Channel 4 they are fortunate to be alive after a twister tore through the middle of their brick home while they were inside.

"I was just getting ready to tell him let's go to the hallway and close the door when it hit, just that quick," said Gladice Hair.

The Hairs have been married for 52 years. They said they thought they had seen everything, but that was before Friday's tornado tore through their yard, their barn and their home.

Hair said she was on one side of the living room and her husband was sitting on the other side when the tornado ripped through the space between them.

"I said, 'Thank you Lord that we're both OK,'" Hair said.

Members of the family's church, neighbors and the sheriff's department rushed to help the Hairs.

"They were inside the home when the storm came through, and they were able to walk away," said Sheriff Joey Dobson. "As I walked in there a little while ago, Mrs. Hare offered me some orange juice."

There were no reports of injuries in Baker County.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter in Lake County at the Windfield Community Center, which is located at 1324 Windfield Road. The Baker County shelter that was opened earlier in the day has been closed.

The Weather Authority said the area is in for another round if rainy weather Friday night.

"That broad area of rain that extends out to our west is your future more rain -- more rain in the Jacksonville area for the next two or three hours at least. The heaviest and most severe weather will be to the south of town," said senior meteorologist John Gaughan. "For the Jacksonville area, the worst of our severe weather is gone. Down to the south it's a different story. That goes from Palatka all the way toward Orlando and then toward Flagler Beach."
