Low Pressure Near Bahamas Could Become Next Tropical System

POSTED: Friday, June 23, 2006

Forecasters are carefully watching an area of low pressure about 200 miles east of the Bahamas for signs of tropical development.

Channel 4 meteorologist Richard Nunn said satellite imagery and surface observations indicate that the low become better organized Friday morning and upper-level winds are favorable for development.

The low-pressure area is moving slowly to the west-northwest.

"Over the course of the weekend, it's possible this could be the next tropical development," Nunn said on the local station at noon.

An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft may investigate the system on Saturday.

Nunn said weather conditions are favorable for at least a 50 percent chance of rain in the greater Jacksonville area on Sunday, but that is not related the low pressure in the Bahamas.
