Rains continue to fall; waters rise

Almost as soon as much of the rain from Thursday morning's downpours drained, another round of storms arrived and dropped another 2 to 4 in the afternoon and early evening.

By 8 p.m., all flood advisories and warnings were canceled, but some roads were still covered with water.  The last of the rains were near St. Augustine and beginning to move out.

"The worst for tonight is now over, but there will be the chance of rains throughout tonight ," chief meteorologist John Gaughan said. "Friday should be a little better with, the lieklihood of heavy rains mainly south of Jacksonville."

Over 72 hours, most of northeast Florida has received 6 to 8 inches of rain, with more in isolated area. Palm Valley has recorded 12 inches in three days.

Jacksonville awoke Thursday to a third day of thunderstorms from a front that continues streaming moisture out of the Gulf of Mexico.

Streets in St. Nicholas looked like lakes, with some garbage cans washed away and overturned, leaving trash floating down the street.

"This is the worst I’ve seen because it's actually up in the yard," said Carl Reading. "It’s knee deep back there by the house."

Standing water at the busy intersection at Atlantic and University boulevards caused a traffic slowdown during the morning commute. Several weather-related accidents across town complicated people's drive to work.

Storms could return on Friday in the southern portions of Channel 4's viewing area, but drier weather is expected for the weekend.
