Back to School: St. Johns County forecast

St. Johns County forecast on this first day back to school

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Did anybody see where the summer went? Seems like with every passing year it gets shorter and shorter. Nonetheless, it's the first day so here's how you need to prepare.

Specifically for St. Johns county this morning, skies are mostly clear with temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Visibilities are good with perhaps a light haze of fog in some of the more rural or low-lying parts of the county.

For the morning bell, look for temperatures to move up through the mid 70s county wide under mostly sunny skies. Heading into Recess or the lunch hour, the kiddos will definitely need to be in the shorts and short sleeves as temperatures move into the mid 80s under light winds.

By the time the kids are dropped off, expect the temperatures in the upper 80s east of the intercoastal and lower 90s for areas west of I-95. The chance of rain today is very small at around 10 to 20%.

As for the rest of the viewing area, expect much of the same. Mostly sunny skies will bathe the first coast allowing temperatures to move into the low 90s. Sunburns will be a dime-a-dozen for those spending copious amounts of time outdoors today. The UV Index is well in excess of 10 which means burn times are less than 30 minutes.

With each passing day this week, the weather will become more and more uncooperative. Rain chances will be on the steady increase under increasing clouds. All of this thanks in part to a cold front (mainly just a wind shift) that will slide in from Georgia around a very strong high pressure system over the southern plains. This will destabilize our atmosphere allowing for afternoon scattered to widely spread thunderstorms. While washout conditions are not anticipated, we'll certainly be dancing around the storms as they roll through.

Speaking of high pressure, the south is in the midst of a gripping heat wave. Sweltering temperatures have dominated the south with high temperatures in excess of 105 degrees in some locations with heat index values as high as 115 degrees.

Heat emergencies have been declared in many locations like Houston where cooling centers have been set up.

The National Weather Service has issued Heat Advisories and Heat Warnings including areas from Texas to Florida northward to Oklahoma and Arkansas.

As for the weather in Jacksonville, this high pressure cell will not affect us directly as we are expected to stay on the periphery over the next few days.

Anybody else looking forward to autumn or winter?
