Back-to-back freezes: Protect your 3 Ps

Freeze warning in effect for all counties in Northeast Florida

Typical NEFL/SEGA freeze for Wednesday morning, protect people, pets, plants. Pipes and pools should be ok, except in the normally colder locations north and west of town.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.5 AM Wednesday Update: Temperatures as of 5 am have dropped to 31 degrees in Jacksonville, 30 in Gainesville and Palatka, 28 in Valdosta, 32 at Waycross and Brunswick. Temperatures may drop another degree or two at all locations but shouldn't get much colder.

The big story: the wind! While the wind advisory has been canceled, the current winds between 5 and 10 mph make it feel like 25 degrees in Jacksonville and 24 degrees in Gainesville.

Definitely bundle up today as temperatures will hang out in the 40s for the majority of the day, perhaps breaking 50 degrees for a few hours around 3 pm before plummeting again tonight. It'll be a windy day again with sustained winds between 10 and 15 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph.

It'll be a beautiful day with all of us bathed in bright sunshine. The clear skies and dry, northerly winds will drive in even colder air tonight with many of us in the 20s by Thursday morning.

We have it good, believe me. If models are to be believed, temperatures may drop to below zero in New York City for the first time since 1994 and temperatures as cold as -30 below zero in parts of New England.

10 PM Tuesday Update:  The biggest impact will be from wind chill (feel-like) temperatures as you start your Wednesday.  Wind chills will be from the teens in Georgia to around 25-29° along the coast.  And...  The winds will remain gusty throughout the day, so it will continue to feel very chilly throughout the day.

And...

Thursday morning we will have colder temperatures, but winds will become very light and frost will be an issue as you get up.  Expected Thursday morning lows will be from 25° to 32° with freezing conditions at the beach.

Layer-up and stay safe while you stay warm!

It appears as though Punxsutawney Phil got it wrong (again). Really wrong. A strong Canadian cold front will usher in cold daytime high temperatures, several freezes this week into next week.

A freeze warning has been issued for all the counties in northeast Florida until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. This does include the immediate coast/beaches. A wind advisory is also in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

We first mentioned the possibility of an arctic outbreak last week for much of the United States, including those of us in Florida. That said, the models have backed off the severity of the outbreak but it's still going to be enough to send us deep into the freezer a few times this week and next week.

A deep trough is carving its way into the eastern United States and unlike most of the fronts that blow in and out of Florida within a day, this one is going to set up shop for a while. You know it's bad when even the cold fronts want to hang out in Florida.

High temperatures are expected to hang out in the low to mid 50s this week with morning lows dipping into the 20s Wednesday and Thursday morning and possibly freezing again on Friday morning for some locations.

There will be a brief rebound in the temperatures Friday and Saturday afternoons with highs exceeding 60 degrees before a reinforcing shot of cold air finds its way into Florida knocking our high temperatures down into the 40s under clear skies with lows once again back into the 20s and 30s.
