Maine May Have Set All-Time Record Low for April

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – So you hate winter, huh? You think the highs in the 40s that Jacksonville has a few times a year is painful and ridiculous being that we live in, well, Florida.

If you think that mother nature hates you, think of how the people in Maine feel. It's three full weeks into Spring and they may have established the coldest April temperature ever observed: try 20 below zero!

I would rather have dinner at my in-laws than deal with that. Seriously.

According to the National Weather Service, on the morning of April 6, 2015, the low at Caribou, Maine was -4F. This broke the all-time April record low of -2F, set on April 2, 1964. The low at Houlton of -13F broke the all-time April record low of -7F set just the prior morning. Before that, the all-time April record low was -6F, set on April 10, 1977. The low of -13F obliterated the daily record of 8F, set in 1995. Folks, it broke the record by 21 degrees! Amazing.

At Presque Isle, the low of -13F broke the all-time April record low of -4F, set on April 7, 1893.

The coldest spot was Big Black River which has a low of -20F. It is possible that this is an all-time record low for the State for the month of April, but is still unofficial and pending a (60 day) certification review period.

While I was looking into temperature records, I stumbled across something sort of interesting in regards to record heat:

I found that the majority of all-time state record high temperatures were set in the brutally hot decade of the 1930s (70 years ago). 34 states have set all-time record highs prior to 1940 and only two records after the year 2000. Here is the breakdown by decade for all 50 states according to the National Climatic Data Center:

1910's or Prior: AK, CA, ME, MN, NH, OR, VT

1920's: AL, NY

1930's: AR, CO, DE, FL, HI, ID, IN IA, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MS, MT, NE, NJ, ND, OH,                    OK, PA, TN, TX, WV, WI

1940's: None.

1950's: GA, IL, MO, VA

1960's: WA

1970's: MA, RI

1980's: NC, UT, WY

1990's: AZ, CT, NV, NM

2000's: SD, SC

With approximately 40% more CO2 in the atmosphere than the 1930s, I just found it interesting that many of those records remain standing.
