Snow in Georgia; 3% chance of flakes in Florida

Bigger impact will be 10-day stretch of seasonable or below temperatures

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The National Weather Service is warning that a mix of rain and snow could fall across parts of north Georgia, with up to 1 inch of snow forecast in higher elevations on Wednesday.

Though snowfall is expected to be light, forecasters said the winter weather could lead to hazardous driving conditions across the state's mountain region.

The weather service issued winter weather advisories for the area, which includes 15 counties and cities such as Blairsville, Calhoun, Cleveland, Dalton, Dahlonega and Dawsonville.

Freezing temperatures are expected to reach North Florida by Thursday morning, and forecasters say because a few light showers may accompany this passing front, there is a chance -- 3 percent or less chance -- of a few snowflakes in Florida overnight.

Additional cold fronts will cross the region on Friday and again early on Sunday, which will reinforce the cold air mass in place while producing strong offshore winds over the coastal waters. These fronts may bring some light rainfall to portions of our area during their passage.

A more widespread hard freeze is possible on Friday night and Saturday morning as high pressure briefly settles over our region, allowing winds to subside.

"It'll be nothing like last week -- most in Jacksonville will not freeze at all over the next few days -- the real story is the length of time," WJXT Chief Meteorologist John Gaughan said Wednesday. "We are going to be in a long stretch of cold -- through the end of next week."
