The winter of 2013-14 just won't give up. If anything, it continues to intensify as more and more cold and snowy weather records fall across the country. It only makes sense that 49 of 50 states now have snow on the ground.
The Farmer's Almanac, the models, groundhog, your grandmother's aching knee, Indian folklore and more have all pointed to a harsh winter and so far those predictions have not been put on ice.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released an updated map of the snow cover across the country and indeed snow is on the ground in 49 of 50 states. The one hold out? No, not Hawaii. It's Florida.
Therefore if you're planning to escape Winter's grip, don't let your vacation be put on ice in the 'tropical' destination of Hawaii. Snow has capped Mauna Loa on the Big Island. John Gaughan posted the snowman picture to his facebook page and thought I'd share.
This isn't the first time that snow has been reported in 49 of the 50 states. Just a few years ago back in 2010 it happened. The one hold out that year? Not Florida! It was Hawaii! Go figure! It should be noted that some say there were a few patches of snow at the top of Mauna Loa that year which would have meant all 50 states had snow on the ground. That was never confirmed however.
According to NBC News, this frightful winter has cost $15 billion in economic losses and several thousand flights have been cancelled just in this winter storm alone.
The good news is that there appears to be a late winter thaw in store for much of the country heading into this weekend before another clipper brings more snow to the northern US by next week.
