News4Jax's new app -- StormPins -- revolutionizes the way you share your weather experiences by sharing, even showing what you see.
StormPins is a map-based social network that knows where you are and allows you to see real-time pictures and video in your area. StormPins has been described as "Instagram meets Twitter," but custom-built for allowing you to connect with each other -- even people you don't know -- when it matters most.
Once you download StormPins to your Apple or Android smartphone, you can take a picture or shoot some video -- anything to share about the weather where you are. When you include the photo or video in your pin on StormPins, you can tag your location.
Whether it's a storm moving through, a flooded roadway, a tree knocked down or just a spectacular sunset, drop a pin. Whatever you see, you can share with StormPins.
"You can also check out what other people are sharing and comment on or like their pins," said The Weather Authority's Richard Nunn. "From sunsets to severe weather, with storm pins we will all be able to share the view."
Have fun with great shots at the beach or share a shot of your next family outing. StormPins is simple, informative and fun. When severe weather hits, alert others with pins of stormy weather or storm damage. Then check out what others pinned to see how the severe weather might impact you.
The Weather Authority is a big part of StormPins, too. The team will be watching what you pin and they will share your photos on air and online.
"With the help of our viewers we will now have weather watchers recording pictures and video from all over Jacksonville," Nunn explained. "StormPins will revolutionize the way we share weather."
Several area Emergency Management departments are training on StormPins and will have their own accounts, allowing them to warn the residents of their counties about closed roads and other situations within their county.
Don't just pull out your phone or tablet for storm damage. The Weather Authority loves to see great beautiful weather pictures too. A few times a day The Weather Authority will pick a great pin and feature the picture on air and online and send the pinner a News4jax umbrella. Your pins may also be featured on our Facebook as the StormPins weather photo of the day.
StormPins is available for download for Android and iPhone, just search for WJXT. Download it now and join the weather conversation.
