Where to see a white Christmas

Look hard and you may find snow

Fresh snow lays down in the Rockies Friday before moving out toward Wisconsin in time for a white Christmas.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For many around the River City, snowfall on Christmas Day requires a plane ticket to the Rockies or a car drive to North Carolina. This year, however, the hunt for snow will require a trip to Minnesota or Wyoming.

The 70 degree temperatures we're feeling in north Florida is part of a broader mild weather pattern beginning to take over much of the nation.

The best chances to experience a white Christmas will be across South and North Dakota into Minnesota Sunday. 

Much of the snow still on the ground over northern New England and northern New York and the the Ohio Valley will melt off making fresh snow difficult to find.

The good news for Jacksonville folks is snowmaking 8 hours north of us in the mountains of North Carolina has put down a thinning base for skiers this holiday weekend. 

The odds of seeing at least 1 inch of snow on the ground is usually good each year from Minnesota to Maine. This Sunday snow will be confined to the northern plains and and the central Rockies and possibly parts of upstate New York.

The Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are the parts of the Lower 48* where weather history suggests you often see a white Christmas but this year could be a disappointment.
