GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A local family won a brown Welsh pony for $1 in a Clay County Sheriff's Office auction Thursday.
The pony, a male, was auctioned at Clay County Animal Control on Thursday morning.
The family that won was the lone bidder.
The pony had been handed over to Animal Control after he was found wandering in the county. Deputies said things like that happen often in the county, and sometimes animals are found in poor condition.
"The worst cases are the ones that are abused, and the fine folks at Animal Control, what they do is, they go through all the tests, they get the horses, pigs or livestock up to as good a health as they can before they're sold at auction,” Clay County deputy Gary Cannon said.
The sheriff's office said it will host another horse auction in a month or two.
