Beware of Yahoo customer service scam

Phone numbers online for Yahoo Customer Care are fake

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Yahoo users in need of help from Yahoo Customer Care are being tricked by scammers online. Yahoo warns any phone numbers you come across in an internet search -- claiming to connect you with Yahoo Customer Care -- are fake.

There are online ways to contact Yahoo Customer Care, but by phone is not an option. The Federal Trade Commission has received reports that consumers who have called these fake customer care numbers were offered so-called "Yahoo Customer Care services" for a fee.

Yahoo wants to spread the word that Yahoo customer support is always free of charge and you should never pay to have your password reset, access technical support or get help with your security concerns. Also very important: Yahoo won't ask to remotely connect to your computer for any support-related request. You can get help from Yahoo here: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/account.

Yahoo says if you paid for help with your Yahoo account, you were not working with Yahoo Customer Care and advises you to contact your financial institution to report that charge as soon as possible.

Yahoo says the following are signs your account has been hacked:

  • You are not receiving any emails.
  • Your Yahoo Mail is sending spam to your contacts.
  • Your account information or settings were changed without your knowledge.
  • You see logins from unexpected locations on your recent activity page.
  • Direct Yahoo links that may help you with your support needs
