JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tens of thousands of pounds of ground turkey, including Publix brand products, are being recalled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday.

The recall covers more than 38,000 pounds of ground turkey that may have been tainted with metal shavings from a North Carolina meat processing plant, according to the USDA.

The agency said the ground turkey was produced on Sept. 25 and 26 at Prestage Foods, located in St. Pauls, N.C., and sold in nine states including Florida and Georgia.

The problem was discovered Sept. 27 when plant employees cleaning processing equipment notified the USDA. A retailer noticed a metal shaving in a product the same day.

While there have not been any confirmed incidents of people getting sick or injured linked to the recalled products, consumers are urged to throw them away or return them to the store.
