Trader Joe's, Walmart products listed in massive vegetable recall

Products may be contaminated by listeria, packaging company says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It's probably a good time to check your fridge: A California company is recalling a variety of bagged vegetable and salad products that may be tainted with Listeria monocytogenes.

More than 20 brands of minimally-processed vegetables are being pulled from the shelves of grocery stores, including Walmart, Target and Trader Joe's, because of the voluntary recall.

Mann Packing issued the recall in response to a single positive result found in one of the company's products during a random sampling by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The recall was issued as a precautionary measure, the FDA reported. So far no illnesses have been linked to the affected products.

What is Listeria?

The products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in the young, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Listeria include fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Symptoms frequently surface one to four weeks after contamination, but they've been reported to occur the same day or 70 days later, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Does this affect me?

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the products were sold throughout the U.S. and Canada with "best if used by" dates from Oct. 11 to Oct. 20 listed on the front of their packaging.

Consumers who bought the affected products are urged to throw them away or return them to the store for a full refund. For more information, contact Mann Packing at (888) 470-2681.
