Duval County school board approves budget

Nearly $1.7 billion budget slighty smaller than last year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Duval County school board approved its tentative budget the 2016-2017 fiscal year at a meeting Thursday evening.

Board members gave the green light to a slightly smaller budget at nearly $1.7 billion -- down two percentage from last year's budget.

According to the Florida Times-Union, the board approved a lower millage rate for county property owners.

Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti said the reduction is due to a decrease in a required local effort that the state mandates for districts in order to qualify for education funding.
