JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University apologized to its neighbors Thursday after a malfunction caused loud emergency sirens to wail from the Arlington campus for more than two hours in the early morning Thursday.

JU officials said the university's emergency alert system was damaged during a severe thunderstorm Wednesday evening.

That damage caused loud, intermittent sirens to go off from about 12:45 a.m. to 3:15 a.m., officials said, despite their being no emergency or need for alarm.

“Our campus security team worked diligently throughout the early morning hours to shut off the sirens,” JU said in a statement. “We apologize to our neighbors who were disturbed by the malfunction and our work continues to prevent future malfunctions.”
