Clay County military dependents have extra resource

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – All children have some adjustments starting a new grade or a new school, but some children of military families can have extra challenges because they might be in a new city or one parent may be away on deployment.

The Clay County schools' relatively new Military Resource Center is trying to help making the transition as smooth as possible. It provides academic and emotional support for parents and students in a one-stop setting.

"I think I can point parents in the right direction," said Tina Baker, student liaison for Clay County Public Schools.

Baker, having served in the Navy for more than two decades, knows the sacrifice which come with deployment, the stress of moving from base to base, and even tragedy.

"Sadly, my husband was killed in a military helo accident, so I know what it's like to deal with the grief process," Baker said.

Baker said no matter the family's circumstance, resources must be available. Baker said that since its launch earlier this year, the group has helped thousands of Clay County military families.

"When you look at the Oakleaf area or the Fleming Island HIgh School, or Thunderbolt, the Fleming
Island Elementary, it's about one in four," Baker said of the ratio of military dependents in the classrooms.

The resource center helps families find the right schools for their children after moving. Life counselors also work to help military students build relationships and feel connected to their peers and teachers. Baker said the academic and emotional support they provide is vital.

"They're our first line of defense. We're there to provide a warm smile or a handshake or a hug," Baker said.

Baker said the group also spreads awareness to what these families are going through, which can make a world of difference for these children.

Baker also says if individual needs are there, counselors are available or they can make referrals.

To reach the Military Resource Center, call 904-336-6592 or email tina.baker@myoneclay.net. Baker has an office at on the campus of Orange Park High School that's open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
