JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The state attorney's office teamed up with multiple Jacksonville agencies Friday for their first back-to-school rally, and the organization Families of Slain Children also held a back-to-school event on the Northside.

At both, kids were so excited to be getting clothes and school supplies that they may not have been able to get if it weren't for these organizations.

"Pick out my book bag and get clothes and crayons and stuff," a student named Tavaris said.

Tavaris was one of many kids who got school supplies and clothes from the Familes of Slain Children's event.

Student Meghan Stearns says having back-to-school clothes is so important for kids.

"So they can be prepared to do things, like they have the clothes they can wear, that way they won't have to wear the same thing every day," Stearns said.

Anette Bonner is a single mother of two and says buying school supplies for two kids gets pricey.

"It's very expensive, and I appreciate every drop of help I can get because it's hard getting out there, especially when you're a single parent on a fixed income," Bonner said.

Events like these not only provide back-to-school necessities for kids, but they also help students to understand the importance of making good grades and having respect for their teachers and classmates.

"I'm here to get book bags and get ready for the fifth grade and pass all my grades like I did last year and make mom and my grandparents proud of me," Jurand Wells said.

Both the state attorney's office and Families of Slain Children will continue to accept and donate school items, so anyone can contact them for assistance.

On Saturday, there will be free back-to-school haircuts for girls at the Changing Faces Styling Studio in Argyle Forest. It will last until 6 p.m., and the first 50 girl students get the free haircuts.
