"Dunkirk" is based on the successful evacuation of over 300,000 Allied soldiers across the English Channel as they fought against Nazi Germany. The year is 1940. British and Allied soldiers are trapped in Dunkirk, France, and need to evacuate fast.

The unexpected heroes comes from a fleet of private boats. They transport soldiers secretly and larger ships continue to be attacked. In history, it's seen as a successful rescue that saved the lives of thousands.

Despite this movie's focus on one very specific event, it is effective and engaging. For over an hour you feel like you are standing beside these men and women in war. You feel their anxiety and their triumph.

World War II comes alive in the theater.
