Movie review: 'The Lego Ninjago Movie' builds up family-friendly animated film

Balance of humor, tough talk for an absent father

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

The Lego Ninjago Movie (Rated-PG)

This week expect karate chops and fierce fighting with some of your favorite Lego characters.

"The Lego Ninjago Movie" is good for the entire family.

This animated adventure begins with Master Wu (Jackie Chan) leading a team of ninja warriors on a battle against Garmadon, an evil warlord who wants to take over the city of Ninjago.

Beyond the battles, Garmadon has a secret. He's the father of one of the warriors and he's having a hard time dealing with it. He's an evil warlord, and they're not supposed to have feelings, right? Right. The animated film takes on the serious topic of children growing up in a single parent home, while maintaining a respectable level of humor and Lego action scenes, if you can imagine that.

You'll have to see it to find out if  Garmadon steps up to be a good father or focuses on destroying his son's city.
