Movie Review: 'Baywatch' succeeds with plot, lukewarm humor

Dwayne Johnson leads with action

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Beach bodies, big egos and drugs make up the action-drama 'Baywatch,' rated R. It is just under two hours long.

Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) a veteran lifeguard and Matt (Zac Efron) a pro athlete 'wanna be' lifeguard battle with each other when they should be focused on protecting the beach.

Once they get passed their egos they focus on a deadly drug coming ashore and find out a new investor is behind a massive illegal operation.

"Baywatch" is surprisingly believable as it centers around flakka, a drug that is currently in the news, and the politics of expanding power through corruption. While some of the stunts are unrealistic, it's entertaining.

"Baywatch" debuted on NBC in 1989 and was canceled after one season, ironically, performing better in reruns. Then, it gained popularity and gained success. The cult following for "Batwatch" the television show may lead to success at the box office, too.

There is action, drama and humor. Though there are plenty of laughs, this movie is not for kids and it pushes the envelope on nudity and dirty jokes.
