LAKELAND, Fla. – A 12-year-old central Florida girl was severely burned and is being treated at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati as family and friends raise funds for her parents to remain with her.
Heather Tyer, a sixth-grader, was burned over 71 percent of her body.

Heather was standing near a gas can in her yard on Sunday when the can exploded. She was taken to Cincinnati on Monday and is expected to need extensive treatment.
The Lakeland Ledger reports that several fundraisers have been scheduled over the weekend to help the family.
