Nurse practitioners could get expanded roles

A Central Florida House member filed a proposal Wednesday that could lead to advanced registered nurse practitioners serving as medical directors of health-care clinics.

The proposal (HB 129), filed by Rep. Rene Plasencia, R-Orlando, will be considered during the 2017 legislative session, which starts in March.

It follows years of legislative debates about the roles of advanced registered nurse practitioners.

Current law defines medical directors as being physicians, but Plasencia's bill lists physicians or advanced registered nurse practitioners.

Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, filed the Senate version of the proposal (SB 96) early this month.
