Oklahoma officials call for thousands of baby hats

State sets goal of 5,000 caps

The Oklahoma State Department of Health hopes that a grassroots campaign to knit special baby hats can help combat shaken baby syndrome.

The goal of CLICK for Babies is to create awareness of the symptoms of shaken baby syndrome, like the “period for purple crying.”

During a period of several months, very young babies cry more than they do at any other period in the lives, according to the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The knitted caps are collected and distributed to hospitals where they are given to families, along with copies of a program explaining the phenomenon.

Oklahoma health officials will be collecting the caps until Oct. 1. They have set a goal of 5,000 of the caps.

Guidelines and patterns are available on the Health Department website.
