Don't sweat the small stuff

Do you get irritated by your spouse?  Get irritated by your family or maybe your colleagues?  we all do at times, but there are things you can do to minimize the impact of things that 'bug' you.

A Cleveland Clinic psychologist, Dr. Mike McKee, says it's important not to let small differences fester.

"Little things risk growing and growing and growing so what was a little pile of dust after awhile starts to look like a mountain and your emotions go with it," explained McKee.

The psychologist also says it's often not about who's right and who's wrong.  It's about tolerance and actively learning not to sweat the small stuff. 

McKee suggests talking to yourself and telling yourself over and over that it's not a big deal and to let it go.  On the flip side, you can work positively by identifying the good things about the situation -- like the skills you're learning.

"You're not just focused on the bad things so you can say to yourself, hey I'm learning how to tolerate that and I never thought I could do that which, again, is great learning for life," he said.

McKee adds that getting along with people is one of the most important skill sets you can master. In fact, studies have shown that marriages that are the happiest and longest are ones where people learn not to let little things bother them.
