From acne to wrinkles, expert recommends specific foods to improve your face

There are plenty of topical products you can use to help keep your skin healthy and radiant but you can also give your skin a beauty boost from the inside out.

If acne is your trouble, Dr. Tanya Edwards, a wellness expert at Cleveland Clinic says a powerful antioxidant called glutathione may help clear things up.

"Glutathione is an antioxidant that is so important for the detoxification of waste that foods like cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage - those are really important as well as things like onions and garlic because they are good sources of sulfur, which we need to make the glutathione," said Edwards.

Sun damage is a common skin dilemma as we age. Experts believe some vitamins and antioxidants can play a role in preventing potential damage caused by the sun's rays, like wrinkles.

Research has shown a higher intake of vitamin C may be associated with a less-wrinkled appearance. Vitamins A, E, green tea extract and beta-carotene are antioxidants often used in cosmetic products designed to fight wrinkles.

Edwards says eating or drinking foods high in some of these antioxidants may have benefits too, especially green tea.

"Studies have shown that those of us who probably spend a little bit too much time in the sun would do good by drinking about 2 to 4 cups of green tea per day which may be helpful in decreasing our risk for skin cancer," said Edwards.

Many foods that promote beautiful skin are also good for overall health, so one of the best ways to achieve a healthy glow is to eat a balanced diet and stay well-hydrated.
