MIAMI – The Great American Eclipse has come and gone, and all that's left are the memories and pictures.

However, for those who dismissed warnings about looking directly into the sun without proper protection, eye damage will linger much longer than memories.

If you are worried about eye damage following the eclipse, here are the symptoms you should be looking for, according to preventblindness.org:

- LOSS OF CENTRAL VISION

- DISTORTED VISION

- ALTERED COLOR VISION

If you suffer from one or more of those symptoms following Monday's eclipse, you are urged to visit an eye care profession as soon as possible.

Exposure to the sun's light without the proper eye protection can destroy cells in the retina and cause "eclipse blindness."

Preventblindness.org warns that it can take up to a few days after the eclipse to realize whether damage has occurred.
