Texas rancher's dog hitches ride on ambulance

'Buddy' wasn't about to be left behind when his owner needed care

When an 85-year-old rancher in Texas had to be taken to the hospital, his dog wasn't about to be left behind.

Buddy, a 35-pound Beagle mix, hitched a ride on the side step of the vehicle, the San Angelo Standard-Times reported.

The ambulance crew didn't notice until a motorist flagged them down 20 miles later.

They stopped, loaded the faithful dog inside, and continued the journey.

Buddy's owner, J.R. Nicholson, was released from the hospital that same day and is doing fine.

He got Buddy just four months earlier at a local animal shelter, but says he's now "part of the family."

" I was impressed," Nicholson told the Standard-Times. "He didn't have to go to the hospital with me, but he did."
