Gas drops to under $2 per gallon

Florida's average $2.06

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Gas prices in Northeast Florida are the lowest they've been in six years according to AAA.

In Jacksonville, the average price at the pump is $2 per gallon. The average is a bit higher in Florida, averaging $2.06, compared to across the country where the average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $2.04.

Prices are below $2 at a number of locations around town and residents are glad to hear about the lower prices. The drop couldn't come at a better time, as some are trying to save for the holiday season.

“It determines if you’re eating steak or grilled chicken or if you’re eating Campbell’s soup and grilled cheese,” truck driver Scott Young said.

According to AAA, some people are saving an average of $18 for a full tank of gas compared to two years ago when prices were above $3 per gallon.

An oversupply of oil has kept prices down.  Crude levels remain at levels not seen this high in the last 80 years. The price of oil is also trading around $41 according to AAA, compared to $61 in June of this year.

A spokesperson for AAA said the prices couldn’t come at a better time as people try to allocate money for holiday shopping and travel.

“It makes it so I have more money for food and different things to do for my kids,” Young said.
