1 Dies In Car Crash Into Fruit Stand

Woman Killed; Husband Critically Injured; Elderly Driver Also Hurt

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A woman died and her husband was critically injured Tuesday when a car slammed into a fruit stand at the intersection of Moncrief Road and Edgewood Avenue.

Channel 4's Tarik Minor was told a Lincoln Towncar ran a red light on Moncrief, left the road and struck the fruit stand just before 4 p.m.

Julia Baltierra, 54, was trapped under the car and had to be rescued from underneath the car. She later died at a hospital. Police said she was tending to the fruit stand when she was hit.

A witness said the car was making a strange noise before the accident. Witnesses said the car was driving erratically just before the crash, and police said they believe the driver may have had a medical emergency, which caused the crash.

The driver of the car was in good condition Tuesday night at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. The man who was hit by the car was in critical condition at Shands on Tuesday night.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office traffic homicide detectives were investigating the crash.
