FHP: Migrant Worker Causes Wreck, Killing 2

Driver Suspected In Hit-And-Run Crash 10 Minutes Earlier

Two men were killed in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon in Hamilton County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 28-year-old migrant farm worker was headed south on county Road 141 about 5:25 p.m. when he cross the centerline and struck a northbound pickup truck.

Jose Faustino de la Cruz-Polonio, 28, and the driver of the pickup, 58-year-old Edward Smith, of Madison, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said Cruz-Polonio was suspected of hitting another car on U.S. Highway 41 about 2 miles south of Jennings and leaving the scene about 10 minutes before causing the fatal wreck.

The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol may be a factor in the crash, according to the FHP report.
