Student Advocate Killed; Suspect At Large

Man Shot, Killed At Arlington Condo Complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The search continued Friday night for a culprit responsible for killing one of the latest victims of Jacksonville's gun violence.

Last week, someone shot and killed 38-year-old Leon Buchanan, a man now being remembered as a role model who worked to keep children away from violence.

Those who knew Buchanan said he was always smiling, especially when it came to working with kids.

For five and a half years, Buchanan made a career of reaching out to children through a group called Communities in Schools.

He most recently worked at Lake Forest Elementary School as a student advocate. There he mentored and tutored about 100 children.

"That's what he knew it would take to be working with the kids. To makes sure he was the role model and that he showed them how to face life's challenges," said Buchanan's co-worker, Marcus Haile. "To have someone like him in the lives of these kids every day is a blessing."

However, Buchanan's life was tragically cut short earlier this month. Last Thursday, police discovered the 38-year-old shot to death outside the Les Chateaux Condominiums in Arlington.

Neighbors in the area said he only lived there for a few weeks before he was shot.

Haile said what's disheartening about the whole thing is that Buchanan worked with kids to make sure they never took the path to violence.

"He was often told he should and could do bigger and better things and he could go on to greatness, but he really liked doing what he was doing," Haile said.

Police said they still have no leads in the case.

Anyone with information that could help police find the gunman who shot Buchanan is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
