Westside Neighbors Say They Saw The Violence

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Toni Bennett said she was on her back porch with her family when she heard the unimaginable right next door.

"He just looked at us and said, 'I gotta do what I gotta do,' and started shooting his dogs," Bennett said of his neighbor.

Jeffrey Stewart, 46, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty on April 15.

According to a police report, Stewart admitted to shooting, killing and dumping two of his family dogs.

Bennett said she heard the whole thing happen in the yard adjacent to hers on Alexa Lane.

"He shot the first one, that was a one-shooter. The second one just whelped real bad. My granddaughter and my other neighbor with us--they'd seen him put the dogs in a bag, and then put it in the back of his truck," Bennett told Channel 4.

According police, Stewart told the responding officers he dumped the dead dogs at Halsema Air Field. The arrest report said both dogs had been shot in the head.

When asked why he shot the dogs, Stewart told the officers because one was acting strange and he didn't know why he shot the second one.
