Steam detox canopy yields dramatic results
Jacksonville spa offering cutting-edge treatment
There's a new spa in town offering two treatments never available before in Jacksonville.
Channel 4 has told you about the Salt Spa before; the walls and floors are covered with special pharmaceutical grade salt that's supposed to help people with respiratory problems and skin issues like psoriasis.
Now, there's a new treatment that some women say is helping them lose the stubborn pounds they couldn't before.
Lisa Harper is pushing 50 and she decided it was time to try something else to lose weight.
"I started working out and worked out three months with a personal trainer," said Harper. "Stayed on a 1,200 calorie diet and wasn't dropping a pound, so I got real frustrated."
Harper said she was about to accept herself as she was when she heard about a new way to lose weight through steam detox treatments. After her first couple of times in the steam canopy, she lost six-and-a-half pounds so she decided to stick with the treatments.
"I've continued to lose and now I'm down almost 22 pounds," said Harper.
And she's not the only one; Margaret Miele also dropped some stubborn weight from the treatments.
"I lost ten pounds in three weeks," said Miele. "It felt fantastic, it was very relaxing and I didn't have to workout which was great and I noticed immediately the benefits, the energy level."
During the treatment, clients are on a massage table, special oils and mud are applied during a massage, then a canopy lowers; patients are zipped in and the heat is turned up.
"The steam is over your body, your head is out. We do keep the core of your body cool," said owner of Salt Spa, Jacqueline Rush. "The therapist is with you at all times, massaging your face and keeping your face cool and your neck cool so you can endure the steam. You can actually burn up to 600 calories in a 20 minute session."
Miele thinks the therapy worked for her, even without exercise. Remember she lost 10 pounds in three weeks, but Harper lost 22 pounds in the same amount of time and did workouts. Both women followed a low calorie meal plan.
"I stayed on the plan that my trainer had set up for me," said Harper. "Protein, fruits, veggies, that's pretty much what I did."
Weight loss isn't the only thing this steam canopy is used for. In fact Dr. Deepak Chopra believes detoxing with this system can reduce your risk of some cancers.
"If we do a four times a year seasonal steam," said Dr. Chopra. "We would see a reduction in breast cancer."
