St. Johns Co. deputy critically injured

Deputy was assisting charity motorcycle event

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A St. Johns County Sheriff's deputy was critically injured Saturday in Ponte Vedra Beach, after a car crashed into his motorcycle, the sheriff's office said.

Just after 12 p.m. Dep. Greg Dubowsky was riding his motorcycle assisting the "Ride for Smiles" event Saturday. During the escort, Dubowsky stopped a driver for not obeying a traffic direction from another officer. After making the stop, Dubowsky headed south on A1A to meet the rest of the escort as they entered the city of St. Augustine.

As Dubowsky approached the 2800 block of A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach with his lights and sirens on, a Fiat entering the roadway crashed into him, the sheriff's office said. Charges are pending against the driver of the Fiat, Joan Wilke of Illinois.

Dubowsky was taken to Shands Jacksonville. He is expected to undergo surgery for multiple injuries.

He has been with SJSO since 1996.
