St. Johns Co. deputy recovering after crash

Deputy was assisting charity motorcycle event when hit by car

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A St. Johns County deputy injured Saturday in Ponte Vedra Beach when a car crashed into his motorcycle is now in serious condition and is recovering, according to the Sheriff's Office said.

Just after noon Saturday, Deputy Greg Dubowsky was riding his motorcycle assisting the "Ride for Smiles" event. During the escort, Dubowsky stopped a driver for not obeying a traffic direction from another officer, deputies said. They said that after making the stop, Dubowsky headed south on State Road A1A to meet the rest of the escort as they entered the city of St. Augustine.

As Dubowsky approached the 2800 block of A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach with his lights and sirens on, a Fiat entering the roadway crashed into him, the Sheriff's Office said.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Fiat, Joan Wilke, of Illinois.

Dubowsky was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center and was initially said to be in critical condition. He was expected to be in the hospital for a while for various surgical procedures.

Dubowsky has been with the Sheriff's Office since 1996.
