Vessel in danger of capsizing
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – St. Johns County Fire Rescue, the St Johns County Sheriffs Office and the City of St. Augustine Police Department responded to a reported vessel in distress in the area of the St. Augustine Inlet at approximately 9:30pm Monday. Upon arrival, crews were informed that the vessel was carrying two passengers and that they were without power and in jeopardy of capsizing.
SJCFR launched two personal watercraft with operators and rescue swimmers and SAPD launched a rescue boat to begin a search for the vessel. In addition, SJCFR requested air support from the SJSO to assist in the search.
Shortly after rescuers began searching, they were informed by Air 1 that the vessel had been located approximately 1/4 mile off the coast adjacent to Vilano beach. SJCFR Watercraft 4 responded to this location and safely rescued two passengers and one dog from the vessel. The passengers and canine were transported safely by SJCFR to an awaiting rescue where they were evaluated but declined treatment or transport.
The FWC and the USCG will be investigating the incident.
