PENNY FARMS, Fla. – All lanes of State Road 16 were closed for nearly three hours early Thursday morning as the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the death of a man on an electric scooter who was struck by a pickup truck.
Troopers said 42-year-old David Carver was riding the scooter east on S.R. 16 just west of State Road 218 about 6 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a pickup driven by Donnie Griffis, 59, of Glen St. Mary.

Channel 4 was told Griffis tried to aid Carver, but Carver died at the scene.
Neither Griffis nor his passenger were injured in the accident.
The FHP said Carver was not wearing a helmet, and fog in the area may have contributed to the accident, troopers said.
According to the FHP report, charges are pending.
