ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A man was airlifted to Orange Park Medical Center's trauma center after his car crashed into a tree on Interstate 95 Saturday afternoon, according to firefighters.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue Lt. Andrew O'Quinn said the crash happened in the southbound lanes on the Interstate just south of County Road 210 shortly before 1 p.m.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Jim Forrest, Jr. had a severe coughing episode and ran off the roadway. He then crashed into a tree.

O'Quinn said Forrest, 43, was trapped after the crash. Firefighters had to extricate him before they could work on him.

Forrest's condition was serious when he was flown to the hospital, according to rescuers.

The crash tied up traffic while crews worked to clear the scene.
