Georgia man dies in Jekyll Island triathlon

Coroners believe man had heart attack during race

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A Georgia man died during the Turtle Crawl Triathlon at Jekyll Island on Saturday.

According to the Georgia Coroners Office, 44 year-old-Christopher Petty of Atlanta died during the Turtle Crawl and Nest Fest.

The Coroner's Office said that Petty was among three to four others who raised their hands, a standard call for help during the race.

Petty had finished 250 meters of the 400 meter race when he called for help in front of the convention center.

When arriving EMT's responded, Petty reportedly told them to treat the others asking for help first.

When the first responders checked out the other people calling for help, they then went back to Petty, who was found face down in the water.

He was found in about 8 to 10 feet of water.

Petty will be taken to the GBI for further tests to determine the cause of the death, but it is believed that he may have had a heart attack during the race.
