Fire destroys Clay County home

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – An Oakleaf Plantation home was destroyed by fire Monday.

Clay County and Jacksonville firefighters were called to the two-story home in the 3300 block of Horseshoe Trail Drive just before noon.

Firefighters said an 18-year-old started up a lawnmower in the garage and there was a backfire that set the garage ablaze. They said fuel that spilled while the lawnmower was being filled caught fire.

The fire quickly spread to the house, and firefighters said flames were consuming the home when they arrived.

The teen escaped uninjured. Firefighters said five people were in the home at the time, but none were hurt.
