Simple ways to save money this summer

Summer can be expensive with the kids at home and the air conditioner cranked.  But we have some simple ways to help you save.

First of all, do you love that specialty frozen coffee?  Well, instead of spending $4, make it yourself.  All you have to do is freeze brewed coffee into ice cubes.  Places those into a blender with a flavored cream and blend.  You can even add whipped cream, just like your favorite coffee shop.

Another way to save, take shorter showers.  Limit them to ten minutes and install a low-flow shower head.  According to the EPA, doing this saves up to 20,000 gallons per year.

Another idea, cook outside.  Using the stove or baking creates a lot of excess heat that has nowhere to go except in your house.  Using the grill outside keeps it cooler inside.

While you're outside, hang up your laundry.  Let the sun and warm summer breeze do the drying for you.  If you can't hang up clothes outdoors, try using a lower heat setting on your dryer.  Or try partially drying your shirts and letting them air dry the rest of the way.

If it's a super hot day and you want to stay indoors, rent DVD's for $1.20 from Redbox or check out movies from the local library.

Finally, you've heard it before, but it works.  Replace your air filter.  A dirty filter makes your AC unit work harder, and that costs you more money.
