Teen walks after hit by car

Teen hit by car while riding scooter last year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A year after being hit by a car, a Jacksonville teen is walking on his own.

"Never give up" is the motto Alan Conerly and his family have lived by for the last year.

"N-G-U. Never give up. Right here. Never give up," said Conerly.

The 17-year-old was hit by a car last March while riding his scooter to Fletcher High School. With an army of doctors, speech and physical therapy twice a week, Conerly reached a major milestone.

Just a few weeks ago, he was able to walk without help.

"I saw him take those first couple of steps. I mean it was the happiest day of my life," his mother, Anita Conerly, said.

Conerly said the driving force behind his recovery were his two older brothers, Aubrey and Antwoine. Aubrey plays the role of the physical therapist at home.

"It's an honor, but again, like I tell him, everything he does, it starts with him," said Aubrey Conerly.

"We don't look at, 'Oh, we're injured, we can't do this, we can't do that.' We wait, work hard, wait, work hard until we get back," said Antwoine Conerly.

While Alan admits he still has a long way to go, he remembers his family's mantra that will one day get him back on the basketball court playing the game he loves.

"A victory feels better when you know you've fought," said Conerly.
